Meniscus is the film formed by surface tension on the top of a stream.  It is a barrier for emerging pupae.  It is a stage for flight when one emerges.  To a trout, the meniscus looks like nothing, except when it looks like a mirror.  Then it looks like even less.

E.  Down to C.  Down to B… to A… to E… As there is more weight, there is more depth.  As there is more depth, more weight is needed.

A riffle breaks the meniscus.  An obstacle on the bottom causes a disturbance on the top.  The top is less of a barrier now but it is more chaotic. 

POOL .mp3

A deep pocket will slow the water and make a pool.  The meniscus is restored.  The chaos ordered. 

ZUG BUG .mp3

A rock is dislodged.  A nymph tumbles.  The stream bottom has a rhythm that is deliberate, if unpredictable.  Soon the tumbling becomes stasis, the stream a galaxy in orbit of the nymph.
