The Doubling Fee Concerto was commissioned by Pat Fortney and the Nebraska-Wesleyan University Symphonic Band and written for clarinetist Christy Banks. This work is a sort of "etude" using various techniques that were not traditional before the 20th Century. The ensemble parts include some aleotory, extended techniques, a sort of nod to serialism, and a lot of interlocking post-minimal rhythms. The soloist switches from Bb clarinet to Eb clarinet.
